Great Britain is the nation-state created from the (sometimes violent) union of England, Scotland, and Wales; or the island containing these former nations. When you include what ever part of Ireland the British army can hold onto (currently Northern Ireland), you have the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is also the seat of the the British Empire, which was probably the most extensive, oppressive, and lucrative, empire in human history.
